Given its peculiar characteristics in terms of dimensions and structure, this station is the largest intermodal and commercial transport centre built in Spain to date. Its strategic situation in the city of Málaga has made it possible to integrate the railway into the city’s urban framework.
The station building is basically on two storeys, intended for actual railway services and for the areas for commercial and leisure activities, while the main lobby and the common areas for client traffic are on just one level, giving a sensation of spaciousness and luminosity. Among the station’s facilities, a striking feature is the large 5,600 square metre canopy (78x72 metres) without intermediary pillars, which dominates the entire length of the area running along all the platforms and tracks, with views of the commercial area through a glass curtain wall measuring 780 square metres. The platforms are protected under this canopy.
