Vialia Málaga María Zambrano

Given its peculiar characteristics in terms of dimensions and structure, this station is the largest intermodal and commercial transport centre built in Spain to date. Its strategic situation in the city of Málaga has made it possible to integrate the railway into the city’s urban framework.

The station building is basically on two storeys, intended for actual railway services and for the areas for commercial and leisure activities, while the main lobby and the common areas for client traffic are on just one level, giving a sensation of spaciousness and luminosity. Among the station’s facilities, a striking feature is the large 5,600 square metre canopy (78x72 metres) without intermediary pillars, which dominates the entire length of the area running along all the platforms and tracks, with views of the commercial area through a glass curtain wall measuring 780 square metres. The platforms are protected under this canopy.

  • Designed by the architects Salvador Pérez Arroyo and Federico Sotomayor.
  • Part of the Vialia concept, which combines rail services with other tertiary and commercial uses (102 premises).
  • Its conception as a station for the 21st century has given the city of Málaga a place to meet up and to visit.
  • The new intermodal station connects the high speed Córdoba-Málaga line with the local Málaga-Airport-Fuengirola line, the city and intercity bus station, and the future Malaga underground train network.
  • The station covers a surface area of 32,000 square metres.
  • Complete accessibility for persons with disabilities or reduced mobility in the various areas making up the station (railway, commercial, leisure, and etc.). Equipped with lifts and escalators. Atendo and Dialogo services are available.
  • Eight tracks: five of them are of international width to be used by high speed trains and the remaining three tracks of Iberian or conventional width.
  • Five new platforms: the first three are 405 metres long, and the two remaining platforms are 350 and 250 metres long, respectively.
  • There is an outside car park for 250 vehicles. Underneath the commercial zone the largest car park in the city has been built, on two levels, with capacity for 1,300 spaces.
