New section commissioned between Valencia and Castellón

Adif has commissioned a new section of the Mediterranean Corridor between the cities of Valencia and Castellón, a popular touristic destination by the sea, reducing travel time between Madrid and Castellón by 37 minutes compared to the current service. The new section is a new and important step in the full modernization of the Mediterranean Corridor, as well as an improvement of the interregional transport system. The Mediterranean Corridor is one of the main projects in Adif in the coming years, since this 1.300 km long corridor links some of the main industrial and touristic destinations in Spain, such as Barcelona and Valencia, and its ports, as well as the very important economic areas of Murcia an Almeria. The line extends to France and it is the door to the EU.

Adif High Speed invested 178 M € in the first phase of the project that will transform the Valencia-Castellón section into a full High Speed section. Works, for now, include the installation of 160 km of new rails more than 160.000 sleepers, 110.000 m3 of ballast and 72 new turnouts.

In this first phase, Adif transformed the 74 km section into a three-rail section, therefore allowing for High Speed traffic coming from Madrid and Valencia to reach Castellon using standard gauge trains.  Conventional and Commuter trains will also run on this new section since the three-rail technology also includes conventional Iberian-gauge trains traffic (adapted to 1668 mm gauge). The electrification and telecom systems, the fiber optic network, and 20 stations were also adapted to this new technology.
